The earliest surviving part of the building dates from the 11th century, with the gothic cathedral itself dating mainly from the 14th-16th centuries. Hereford Cathedral is famous for being the home of the Mappa Mundi, the largest medieval map known to exist, dating from approximately the year 1300. As its name suggests in Latin, the map was drawn to chart the extent of the known world, with Jerusalem at its centre.
